Do School Improvement Specialists have specific areas of expertise? What are they?

JP School Improvement Specialists are trained to provide support and training in all areas of instruction. In addition, each SIS does have certain areas that they have acquired an in-depth knowledge of: math standards, ELA standards, ELL, Spec Ed, HS, MS, early childhood education, leadership skills. JP firmly believes that acting as a collaborative team where ALL SISes have knowledge in each area, allows all of our sites, no matter which SIS is on site, to have a team of experts no matter what the content. We also make sure that the SISes who support a site are consistent from month to month so that trusting and lasting relationships can develop between the JP staff and the school staff.

How long do you work with the schools?

We have been in some sites for as long as 18 years. We are also in sites that were forced to discontinue services because of a lack of funds and have returned to JP when finances have improved. The research indicates that 3-5 years is necessary to turn around a school and JP has been able to fulfill that requirement and beyond.

What do you mean "coach" the teachers? What does that look like?

The JP Responsive Coaching Model has been evolving over a 26 year time frame. Because of our unique background in direct instruction methodology, JP’s model of coaching is also unique: a step by step process that can be easily transferred to any content area. Because of the explicit nature of our coaching process, our coaching model can be extremely facile to train teachers in how to replicate the model. This allows all JP sites to become independently sustainable- JP’s ultimate goal.

What kind of training or degree is required to do this?

JP School Improvement Specialists are all former licensed classroom teachers with a track record of success.  JP has a stringent hiring process and once hired all School Improvement Specialist participate in ongoing rigorous professional development.

No one can deny the chasm between educational theory and/or research and educational practices in the classroom. What will JP do to bridge that gap in my faculty?

Professional Development-sharing “research based “Best practices”, demonstrating their use in the classroom and providing opportunities for practice with feedback during the professional development.

In classroom coaching- observing the various aspects of instruction, modeling research-based effective practices, including positive behavior management, providing schema regarding the potential impact of the effective practices. Written feedback subsequent to the observation.

Leadership training- recognizing outstanding potential and developing it by modeling the coaching process and then coaching potential leaders in their coaching role.
